“I am allowed by my religion to marry four wives; I’m allowed by my religion to marry and generate, to produce and reproduce. Let me even tell you, Muhammad (peace be upon him), in one of his authentic Hadith’s, (prophetic sayings) and one of the pronouncements that I know, once said and I quote: ‘O you who believe, believers in Allah, and those who believe in me’, says the prophet, ‘marry and generate. Go and marry and generate’, which means you can marry as many as the law permits," he said.

Meanwhile, polygamy has been described as the major cause of poverty and hardship in the northern part of Nigeria.

This view was aired by Muhammad Sanusi II, the emir of Kano, who on Friday, January 24, delivered a lecture through a representative at the convocation of the Federal University, Gusau, in Zamfara state.

Sanusi said that poverty, unlike in the south, will continue in the north until indigenes in the region do away with the tradition of picking more than one wife at will.

The emir is also, however, a polygamist as he received his fourth wife, Sa’adatu Barkindo Mustapha, in 2019, four years after the wedding ceremony was conducted.

The bride has just finished from a university in the United Kingdom where she went for study immediately after she was married to Sanusi.
