- The clinching of Imo after a controversial court verdict by the Supreme Court seems to have spurred the party on
A report by The Guardian indicates that the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the southeast is plotting to capture Anambra state after clinching Imo through a controversial court verdict by the Supreme Court.
Anambra is set to go to the polls to elect a new governor in 2021, and the ruling party is already perfecting plans to make in-roads into the state.
At a stakeholders’ meeting held at the residence of the minister of science and technology, Dr Ogbonnaya Onu, late last year, the party stated in that it intended to dominate the southeast zone’s political space, beginning with the Anambra governorship election next year.
“We are the only zone without a governor elected on the APC platform. It is not right. It is not correct. It is not what we want. We want a change,” Onu who was elected the party’s national leader in the zone at the meeting stated.
The belief is that, if the APC Imo governor, Senator Hope Uzodinma would use this opportunity to perform in the state.
The southeast APC chieftains are optimistic that if Uzodinma's administration endures and positively impacts the people, it could increase the party’s support base in the southeast.
Incumbent Anambra governor, Willie Obiano of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), is not seeking re-election as he is rounding off his second term.
A source quoted in the report said going forward, the APC has planned to consolidate on the inroads it had made in infrastructure development in the southeast to woo Anambra electorates.
Another is the fact that attention is being given to the zone, irrespective of the alleged not- support it had received in two previous elections so far.
Some projects that are being paraded by APC and which will form the plank of the party’s electoral campaign in the state include Akanu Ibiam International airport Enugu, which is being rehabilitated and is billed for reopening in April this year, the Enugu-Port Harcourt and Enugu-Onitsha highways, also being rehabilitated and the Second Niger Bridge.
Recall that last year, a media report had claimed that 10 billionaires are preparing to contest the Anambra 2021 governorship election.
According to the report, prominent among the billionaires are those that contested the governorship in 2013, including Andy Uba, Tony Nwoye, Ifeanyi Ubah, and Godwin Ezeemo.
Other that have so far signalled their intention to participate in the election include Chief Osita Chidoka, Professor Chukwuma Soludo, Senator Uche Ekwunife, George Moghalu, Chief Stanley Uzochukwu and Chief Nicholas
Ukachukwu. Uba, Nwoye and Moghalu are of the APC while Uzochukwu, Ukachukwu and Soludo are of the ruling APGA.
Chidoka and Ekwunife are of the Peoples Democratic Party, Ubah is of the Young Progressives Party, Ezeemo is of the Progressives Peoples Alliance.
