Danny Rose has blamed Jose Mourinho for his sudden exit from Tottenham Hotspur during the winter transfer window.

The 29-year-old defender made a switch to fellow Newcastle United on a short term loan deal until the end of the season.

Mourinho was appointed replacement for Mauricio Pochettino in November 2019 and has improved their progress on the Premier League table.

But since the Portuguese born tactician became the boss at the north London Stadium, Rose made just five appearances.

And he had to join 12th place Magpies to brighten his chances of making Gareth Southgate's squad to this summer's Euro 2020 championship.

Rose told BBC Radio 5 Live: "I do feel I wasn't given as much of a chance as everybody else in the backline. I did want to play for him.

"I knew after a month [of Mourinho joining] I was never going to play. It was difficult going out to train knowing I wasn't going to play.

"It's not worked out, but full respect to him and what he's doing at the club. He took over with the club 12 points adrift of Chelsea [now in fourth place] and now it's four."

The England international made his debut for Steve Bruce's side in their goalless draw against Norwich last weekend with the aim of becoming a starter at his new club.

He added: "I've been given a chance to play week in and week out. "I want to play football again - with the Euros in the summer, I want to put myself in window.
