- The APC in Oyo state has received a great boost as it welcomed over 5,000 defectors
- The new defectors are from the Zenith Labour Party and the African Democratic Congress in Ibadan Southwest local government
- Recall that intra-party crisis, disunity, defections, among other things, led to the APC's defeat in the 2019 gubernatorial election in the state
Though the general election is over and the next one is still far away, political activities are still in top gear as politicians align, realign and strategise mainly to protect their interests.
The 2019 governorship election in Oyo state saw the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) lose to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), after eight years of dominance.
Months after, it appears the APC has learnt its lesson as it begins to re-accommodate ex- and new members with a view to boosting its numeric strength ahead of the next poll.
On Thursday, February 6, the APC received a great boost as it received over 5,000 defectors from the Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) and the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Ibadan Southwest local government.
The Nation reports that the defectors were led by a former commissioner in the state, Chief Lowo Obisesan.
Legit.ng gathers that other prominent names were on the defectors' list. They were received by the APC leader in the Southwest, Segun Oni.
Many of the defectors cited leadership problem in their parties and the need to start enjoying the dividend of democracy as the reason for defecting to the APC.
“Our suffering in politics is enough and we need to enjoy the dividend of democracy,” ZLP chairman of Ward Chairmen Sakiru Anifowose said.
Jimoh Rasidi Akanmu who is also an ADC leader said he led no fewer than 3,000 members of the party to join APC.
Meanwhile, as the Oyo APC is trying to regroup and reunite, the case is different is Edo state where the state governor, Godwin Obaseki, and his predecessor, Adams Oshiomhole, are having an endless battle that has defied reconciliation efforts.
Legit.ng reports that the crisis in Edo state has taken another dimension as the state government is seeking arrest and prosecution of Oshiomhole.
The state wants the national chairman of the APC arrested and prosecuted by the security agencies for allegedly disobeying the orders of the state government.
This was disclosed by the deputy governor of the state, Phillip Shuaibu. He said he was submitting a petition to the Inspector General of Police and the Department of State Services requesting for the chairman's arrest.
