It is no longer news that Catholic priests are regarded as saints as they dedicate their lives to the worship of God. A number of people look up to and admire them but have a change of mind from joining the seminary because of the conditions attached to it.
Catholic priests for one, are required not to have any sexual relations and to remain celibate all their lives to keep them holy and focused on the things of God.
Well, in recent times, a number of people have called for a change of that directive seeing as a lot of scandal has surrounded priests in the past over them not being able to maintain their celibacy.
Nollywood actor and politician, Yul Edochie, has taken to social media via his Twitter page to share his opinion on Catholicism and celibacy.
According to the film star, now that he is older and wiser, he feels that Catholic priests should be allowed to get married.
He wrote: “Now that I’m older and wiser, I believe it’s best for Catholic priests to be allowed to get married.
DON’T ASK ME WHY!”
Well, a number of Nigerians also took to the comment section to react to his tweet. While some people agreed with the actor, others did not and they gave their reasons too.
Stan Stallion wrote: “I bet to disagree Sir Yul... Once Priests start getting married, Catholicism would begin to fade. That Oath of Celibacy makes them Fathers of the church but once they have a family, it becomes a family business and then our Faith as Catholics become threatened.”
Ekweali Adaoma said: “Sir Yul, the call to be a priest is not for just anyone. To say you're white and turn blue along the way is an integrity issue, the one who can't, please, should not! If they try and can't anymore they should just take a bow... Some people truly are noble.”
Patrick Egaga tweeted: “Certainly older but not wiser in this case. You don't solve a problem by introducing a problem. Priestly celibacy is the only reason there is a sense or a claim to a possible hold for morality in the world today. And of course, the only reason that church stands...”
