- Lionel Messi could part ways with Barcelona at the end of this season
- The 32-year-old is currently at loggerhead with the club's sporting director Eric Abidal
- Messi slammed his former teammate saying his department should take responsibility for their actions
Manchester City are reportedly monitoring Lionel Messi's situation at Barcelona following his row with the club's sporting director Eric Abidal.
The 32-year-old openly criticised his former teammate after blaming the current Barca squad of complacency.
Quique Setien's men are currently second on La Liga table - three points behind arch-rivals Real Madrid after 22 league matches.
Abidal accused the Blaugrana stars of lack of commitment which led to the sack of Ernesto Valverde during an interview last month.
But the Argentine is of the opinion that the sporting department should take full responsibility for their actions and inactions on the team.
The comments have left the Catalan club in disarray with Abidal considered being shown the exit doors by his employers if the situation remains unchanged.
Reports in Spain, however, suggest that Messi might walk out of Camp Nou at the end of the season owing to the current outburst at the club.
With Sport Bible reporting that the Argentine's chances of quitting his boyhood club this year has greatly increased.
Messi's current deal with Barcelona allows him to leave before his contract expires without any complication.
Both Carles Puyol and Andres Iniesta triggered the option on their contracts before leaving a few years back.
The four-time Champions League winner wrote on Instagram: “Finally, I think that when players are talked about, names should be given because, if not, we are all being dirtied and it feeds comments that are made and are not true.”
Messi thrived well under Pep Guardiola earlier in his career, and Man City has been tipped as a possible destination for the Argentine according to Manchester Evening News.
This will not be the first time the forward has been linked with a move to join City having made attempts in the past.
Former Barca player Francisco Carrasco believes the current 2019 FIFA best player of the year could depart the club in the near future.

"He [Messi] is ill at ease," Carrasco told El Chiringuito, via AS.
"In all the years I've been watching him and have loved the way he plays, it's the first time Messi has looked to me like he has one foot out of the door. I've never had to say that before."
Legit.ng earlier reported that Lionel Messi has hit back at Eric Abidal, Barcelona sporting director, for playing a blame game on players over the sacking former manager Ernesto Valverde.
Speaking with a Spanish media outlet Diario Sport, Abidal had submitted that lack of full commitment from players was responsible for Valverde's Camp Nou exit.
The former defender also ascribed lack of internal communication to Valverde's disgraceful sacking while positing that the relationship between the former coach and his players dived into the wrong way, hence the decision.
