The past few days have witnessed Nigerians who are resident in Lagos, heavily complaining about the recent ban of motorcycles and tricycles both locally known as okada and keke, by the state government.

Many have continued to register their concerns on social media, since Saturday, February 1, when the ban took effect and called on the governor of Lagos Babajide Sanwo-Olu to regulate the use of the transport systems as opposed to the complete ban.

Among those that have now joined several other notable Nigerians that have waded into the matter is popular music star Seun Kuti.

Surprisingly, while many are focused on speaking against the state government, Kuti appeared to have some words for Lagosians.

According to him, many people who are lamenting do not really care about the okada riders, but are more invested in the fact that transportation has become inconvenient for them because of the ban.

Kuti rolled out a series of problems that range from healthcare and unemployment that the state is facing, and added that instead of agitating for a better situation with these problems, Lagosians are triggered by the fact that they now have to walk several miles to their places of work.

He noted that a lot of the people complaining would not gleefully allow their children or relatives to take up jobs as keke or okada riders.

"If u wish for your children or loved ones to be okada and keke riders please raise up your hand! We know these ain’t jobs. We pacify those we have failed with slave labor and slave wages and we are ready to fight for them to continue slaving away!" his message read in part.

Kuti’s take on the matter steered mixed reactions from some of his followers. Read what some of them had to say below:

iofuani: "It is not about your children riding keke or marwa. It's about the total eradication of people's sources of livelihood. That's what this is about. And the government is the real culprit in all of this. Not the Nigerian professionals."

zee.7766: "I have always had this impression but people would say all hands are not equal but we should all know the system has failed us."

ot.tega: "Nah chief I don’t agree with ya on this one I don’t see how it’s “slave wage” if they earn well above the minimum wage paid by the state government... that same government just took out a backbone in Nigerian transportation which only makes life harder both the transporters and us who use them."

In a related story, Legit.ng previously gathered that Lagosians on social media cried out after the ban, noting that okada and keke napep are easy ways to get around Lagos when traffic is heavy.

However, a video suggested that Nigerians may have found a way to live in Lagos without the help of okada and keke napep riders. A video of people riding horses around Lagos surfaced online.
