- The doctors said that antiviral pills used for treating HIV were applied in the treatment of the 71-year old patient who had been infected with the virus
There are reasons to believe that the world may have seen the worst from the global epidemic, coronavirus as a team of doctors in Thailand has successfully treated a Chinese patient with the disease.
Speaking on the groundbreaking feat on Sunday, February 2, Dr Kriengsak Attipornwanich, one of the doctors, said that cocktail of antiviral medications used for influenza and HIV were applied in the treatment of the patient, a 71-year-old Chinese woman, Jewish Press reports.
Attipornwanich said that the cocktail contained oseltamivir with lopinavir and ritonavir, both of which are anti-viral pills used to tackle the human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV).
He went ahead to say that laboratory results turned negative 12 hours after the medications were given to the woman who had been infected with the 2019-nCoV coronavirus.
Recall that Legit.ng reported that the federal government, through the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), had reacted to claims of the outbreak of Coronavirus in the country.
The NCDC said that such viral reports and rumours are both false and unfounded and therefore called on Nigerians to completely disregard such.
The agency, however, admitted that there was a Chinese man who was put under close observation after his return from China recently but was confirmed free from the disease with none of the known symptoms.
The NCDC, in a statement released on Sunday, February 2, said: “The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control is aware of ongoing rumours of the importation of the Coronavirus to Nigeria."
It also said that to detect the spread of the disease, a laboratory testing platform has already been established in the country.
Moreover, the NCDC cautioned Nigerians to pay close attention to the public health advisory on the epidemic in the country, adding that travellers from China can immediately report to its communication centre if they so wish.
Presidential spokesman, Garba Shehu, on his official Twitter handle informed Nigerians what emergency contact line to call in any confirmed and probable case of the epidemic.
