321m Abacha loot: Malami leaves Nigeria to sign deal with US, New Jersey

- The federal government is really serious about recovering Nigeria's stolen funds hidden abroad

- In fact, AGF Malami Abubakar, has departed to the US to sign a tripartite agreement over the $321 looted by late General Sani Abacha

- The deal is among Nigeria, the US and the Island of New Jersey

Abubakar Malami, the minister of justice and Attorney-General of Nigeria (AGF) on Sunday, February 2, left the country for Washington DC with respect to a proposed tripartite deal with the Island of New Jersey and the United States (US).

The agreement among the three nations is on the repatriation of the $321 stolen and hidden abroad by the regime of late General Sani Abacha, a former Nigerian leader.

The AGF's departure from the country was revealed by his special assistant on media and public relations, Umar Gwandu, Vanguard reports.

Added to his signing of the deal, Malami is also expected to, on behalf of the federal government, attend a meeting in the capital of the US, to review Nigeria's bilateral relations with the world power.

Speaking more on the nature of the high-profile meeting, Gwandu said: “The meeting is not an ad hoc event for addressing impromptu concerns, but a friendly binational meeting that holds annually devoid of intervening concerns or relating to the internal affairs of the participating states."

Top government officials to be present at the meeting include the minister of industry, trade and investment, Otunba Adeniyi Adebayo, the minister of defence, Major-General Bashir Magashi (rtd), and the minister of foreign affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama.

The rest are National Security Adviser, Major-General Babagana Monguno (rtd) and the minister of humanitarian affairs, disaster management and social development, Sadiya Umar Faruk.

Earlier, Legit.ng reported that the chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), Bolaji Owasanoye, had said that Nigeria was waiting for another $400 million from the US.

The sum was said to be part of Nigeria’s money looted by Abacha while he was military head of the country. Speaking on Wednesday, November 14, at a conference by the Nigerian Society of International Law (NSIL), Owasanoye noted the difficulty in recovering the money because of the legal implications involved in it.

Abacha’s loot was hidden in over 12 countries with different legal requirements for the recovery of the assets.

“Nigeria is presently awaiting the return of about $400 million from the US, which is part of Abacha loot.

“We have $322 million returned from Switzerland two years ago as part of the Abacha loot, which is been used for the conditional cash transfer,” he said, adding that the UK has also repatriated $73 million which was a part of proceeds from Malabu oil deal.
