UAE, others show interest in Akwa Ibom aviation sector

The just-concluded 2020 Global Investment in Aviation Summit that took place in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has drawn the attention of global investors to Akwa Ibom state.

A flurry of interest in Akwa Ibom state aviation sector was evident as Governor Udom Emmanuel led a high powered delegation to the summit.

Governor Emmanuel, an accomplished banker, led a high powered delegation to the summit to present the ample investment opportunities to big players in Akwa Ibom's aviation industry.

Legit.ng gathered that many of the investors showed interest in the completion and running of the Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) facility at the Victor Attah International Airport, Uyo.

At the summit, Governor Emmanuel hinted that his administration sees “aviation as a strategic income stream and as such is doing its best to take advantage of it.”

“We have created an investor-friendly environment. Our home carrier, Ibom Air, is receiving attention globally,” he added.

Governor Emmanuel also used the GIAS Summit to meet with the Marriott Group Vice President for Sub-Sahara Africa, Mr Ibrahim Barghout, to finalize arrangement for the smooth opening of the Four-Point by Sheraton, Ikot Ekpene.

Recall that the Akwa Ibom state government recently acquired two new aircraft for Ibom Air to make it a total of five aircraft owned by the state government.

Chairman of Ibom Air, Air Commodore Idongesit Nkanga (rtd), stated this during a press conference with journalists in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom state capital on Tuesday, January 7, adding that the new aircraft would be unveiled later this month.

Meanwhile, plans are underway for Ibom Air to begin scheduled flights on the Cameroon-Nigeria route.

This was disclosed by the secretary to the Akwa Ibom government, Dr Emmanuel Ekuwem, after the last state executive council meeting for 2019.

He revealed that Cameroon to Uyo, Abuja or Lagos was within the approved routes of Ibom Air, adding that the airline will connect Douala with Abuja, Lagos or Uyo in its flight operations.
