2023 presidency: PDP mulls merger, perfects other strategies to unseat APC

The year 2023 may be considered far away by many people, but not Nigerian politicians. Just months after the 2019 general elections, the scheming and strategising for the next general poll have started.
The main opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), in its latest talk about the 2023 elections, has unveiled some of its strategies to unseat the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
According to its national chairman, Uche Secondus, the PDP is ready for a merger which will strengthen it to defeat the APC.

Secondus, Daily Trust reports, said the opposition party is busy perfecting its plans and strategies to dislodge the APC in the next elections.
The PDP chairman added that the party's presidential ticket is open to every member irrespective of the zone the person comes from.
He noted that no one will be barred from contesting even if the person does not come from any zone the party chooses for the next presidential election.
Secondus, however, ruled out the possibility of changing its official name.
He accused the current APC-led administration of failing Nigerians, saying it is responsible for the current insecurity, corruption, hunger, poor economy and poverty.

Meanwhile, Nigeria's elder statesman, Chief Bode George, has said he has all it takes in terms of knowledge and experience to emerge the country's number one citizen in 2023.
Chief George who is an ex-deputy national chairman of the PDP said he would soon make his official position known on whether he will contest the presidential election in 2023 or not.
The elder statesman made the statement on Wednesday, January 29, in Lagos.
However, Nigeria's former vice president, Atiku Abubakar, has revealed what his party should focus on ahead of the 2023 general elections.
Atiku in a tweet via his official Twitter handle, @Atiku, in the early hours of Saturday, January 4, said the PDP should not focus on the 2023 elections at the moment.
The former vice president said the focus should rather be on rebuilding and strengthening the party for the challenges ahead.
Political pundits have reportedly advocated that what should dominate the discourse at the moment should be holding the current government accountable to ensure that it delivers on its mandate.
