- Olivier Giroud could leave Chelsea before transfer deadline day
- Lazio have shown interest in the Frenchman whose contract with the Blues expires this summer
- Chelsea are hoping to sign Mertens before allowing Giroud leave
Italian League giants SS Lazio have reportedly agreed a deal with Chelsea to sign want-away star Olivier Giroud before transfer deadline day.
The striker has made just six appearances under Blues boss Frank Lampard so far this season and the Serie A side are hoping they can lure him away from the Stamford Bridge this month
Despite helping his side win Europa League title last season, the manager has declared him surplus to requirement.
However, the Biancocelesti's hopes of landing Giroud this winter window hinges on the Premier League side finding a replacement for him.
Chelsea have shown interest in signing Belgian star Dries Mertens this window as back up for Tammy Abraham.
According to reports, Giroud is hoping he can revive his career with a move away from his present club to improve his chances of going to Euro 2020 later this summer.
The Sun added that Mertens' personal goal of becoming Napoli's record goalscorer might stop the Blues from sealing the deal.
He currently has 118 goals and 71 assists in 304 appearances across competitions - four behind club legend Marek Hamsik’s 122 goals.
Lampard was quoted to have lined up the Belgian as a quality replacement for Giroud late last year and has been monitoring the player since then.
Mertens will be out of contract with Napoli at the end of this season, but the club might likely cash in on the player.
Inter Milan boss Antonio Conte is also said to be interested in the Frenchman as he continues to build a strong squad.
