PDP backs Abaribe’s call for Buhari’s resignation

- Nigeria's major opposition party says it is in support of a call for the resignation of the country's leader over issues of insecurity

- The party says it is shocked that the president expressed surprise over escalating level of insecurity

- The organisation laments that such statement can be demoralising

Nigeria's main opposition party has expressed shock over comments credited to President Muhammadu Buhari to the effect that the latter said he was surprised at the increased level of insecurity in the country.

The party said the comment was demoralising.

The party said it is supporting Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe's call for the president's resignation if he cannot take charge of the country.

A statement by Kola Ologbondiyan of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) reminded that the primary duty of government is the protection of lives of the people of a country.

The party said Buhari was supposed to get daily briefs from the service chiefs and should be in tune with the situations of the country.

The PDP also reemphasised the need to rejig the security structure of the country.

Legit.ng reports that as Nigerians continued to express fears over what the country is facing and after the members of the National Assembly called for the disengagement of the service chiefs in the country, a meeting between the security bosses and President Muhammadu Buhari held in Aso Rock on Thursday, January 30.

The meeting, it understands, was ongoing at the time of this report. At the meeting were top officials and others relevant to the issues slated for discussion.

Meanwhile, a socio-political movement in the southeast on Wednesday, January 29, disowned Abaribe for asking for Buhari's resignation from office.

The Igbos in Nigeria Movement (INM) called on Abaribe to first, resign, then apologise to Nigerians over the call for President Buhari's resignation.

On its part, the presidency came hard on Abaribe for asking Buhari to resign over the state of security the country.

The mouthpiece of the presidency, Garba Shehu, said this on behalf of the presidency in the late hours of Wednesday, January 29.
