Nigeria's population is growing at an exponential rate, experts have repeatedly said. With about 200 million people, Nigeria is the most populous country in Africa.

The country's population increase is directly tied to the importance Nigerians attach to having children and the rampant practice of polygamy, especially in the north.

Nigerian lawmaker from Kano state, Alhassan Ado Daguwa, recently discloses that he has 27 children from four wives, and hopes to have more, The Cable reports.

On Wednesday, January 29, while he was been sworn-in again after winning his rerun, the Kano lawmaker presented his four wives before his colleagues.

He added the four wives have 27 children and will bear more.

“Mr Speaker, these four wives you have seen have produced 27 kids for me, and I am still counting. I am still counting," he said.

Meanwhile, polygamy has been described as the major cause of poverty and hardship in the northern part of Nigeria.

This view was aired by Muhammad Sanusi II, the emir of Kano, who on Friday, January 24, delivered a lecture through a representative at the convocation of the Federal University, Gusau, in Zamfara state.

Sanusi said that poverty, unlike in the south, will continue in the north until indigenes in the region do away with the tradition of picking more than one wife at will.

The emir is also, however, a polygamist as he received his fourth wife, Sa’adatu Barkindo Mustapha, in 2019, four years after the wedding ceremony was conducted.

Sa’adatu was brought to the emir’s palace on Saturday, August 3, and the traditional Budar Kai ceremony took place on Sunday, August 4.

The bride has just finished from a university in the United Kingdom where she went for study immediately after she was married to Sanusi.
