Amotekun: Southeast governors create own security outfit
- The south eastern zone is set to inaugurate its own security outfit weeks after the launch of Amotekun in the south west
- Governor Dave Umahi says the federal government is already aware of this move
- The governor maintains that part of the tasks before the security agency with be to tackle attacks by suspected herdsmen
A security body in the design of the now controversial Amotekun in the south west is set to be inaugurated in the south east, the governor of Ebonyi state, Dave Umahi, has hinted.
Umahi said the creation of the outfit is at the end stage of planning to ensure it kicks off with effective operation.
Umahi, who chairs the south east governors’ forum, said this on Wednesday, January 29, when he met with Major General Lasisi Adegboye, the General Officer Commanding 82 Division of the Nigerian Army.
Daily Sun reports that Engineer Umahi lamented incessant attacks by suspected herdsmen on parts of the south east and said the security agency is partly created to tackle this and ensure peace in the zone.
Umahi said the zone's governors had informed the country's central authorities about the move to create the security agency.
The report, however, said Umahi did not mention the name of the new security outfit being created.
The report quoted Umahi as saying each region of the country has its own special challenge adding that the south east zone had formed a joint task force.
“We are putting things together because we had a joint meeting with all the service chiefs and the GOC.
“So, we discussed and agreed on what we need to do to continue to give safety to our people in south east,” Engineer Umahi maintained.
He added that everyone would be involved in the security outfit being unveiled because each state in the region plays a vital role to its success.

Legit.ng reports that the national leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, recently spoke out about Amotekun, now seen as a controversial security outfit created by the six governors in the southwestern part of Nigeria.
The report said Tinubu, in a lengthy statement clarifying his stand on the issue, said there is no way Amotekun can be a threat to the unity or foundation of Nigeria.
The position of the former governor of Lagos in which he called Amotekun an inoffensive addition to the security of the country was made available by his spokesperson, Tunde Rahman.
