PDP says it advanced democracy in Nigeria for 16 years

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has said it advanced the cause of democracy in Nigeria during the 16-year period it ruled the country.

The opposition party made the statement when the United States consul general Claire Pierangelo visited Ogun state to meet the state’s governor, Dapo Abiodun, and other dignitaries, Vanguard reports.

Yemi Akinhanmi, the PDP national deputy chairman, told the press that the party urged the US to prevail on President Muhammadu Buhari to sign Electoral Act Amendment Bill into law.

The PDP said the which bill has been on the table of the president unattended to for over four years should be signed and monitored.

During the meeting, Claire Pierangelo said she visited the state to foster cooperation between the United States particularly in commercial, agricultural and educational areas.

Meanwhile, after his appointment as the chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)'s governors' forum, Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal of Sokoto state has revealed how he will work to move the opposition party forward.

Tambuwal said that he will start by trying to reunite all aggrieved governors on the platform of the PDP and get them to fully key into the vision of the party both now and in the future, Daily Trust reports.

He said that his tenure as the head of the forum will bring about unity and repositioning of the party in the capacity of his office.

In another report, Even though his state is troubled, Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno is performing wonders, a faction of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has said.

Chairman of the faction in the state, Usman Badeiri, said his party was happy with the governor and was impressed with his performance within the short period he had stayed in government.

Baderi specifically said the governor had made serious marks in the area of security and development of the state.

Still on politics, a group, Akwa Ibom Liberation Movement, AILM, has described the outcome of the just concluded senatorial/federal and state constituencies rerun election in Essien Udim local government of the state as a victory for democracy.

This was contained in a press release signed by the secretary of the group, Solomon Abasiekong Esq., on Tuesday, January 28.

The group stated that the outcome of the election was very significant, stressing that “it heralded the liberation of the people from a political siege which held them bound for years.

Abasiekong stated that the election also revealed the decline of Senator Godswill Akpabio’s political career, “and the end of his vice-grip on the state.
