Coronavirus: FG shuts down Chinese supermarket in Abuja over illegal importation

- The coronavirus scare has led to the shutting down of a Chinese supermarket in Abuja

- It was discovered that the supermarket illegally imports seafood and other product, some with irregular shelf life

Nigeria’s government has shut down a popular supermarket belonging to some Chinese and located in Abuja over issues with the dreaded and spreading coronavirus.

The officials of the government, while acting on information, stormed the supermarket to discover illegal operations and importation of foods that are deemed harmful for consumption.

According to the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC), the supermarket located in the Jabi area of Abuja was discovered to have seafood and animals brought into the country illegally.

More troubling was that the officials said they met some of the products with expired dates while some had shelf life lasting for over 50 years.

The government agency said it was already moving to clear all the products considered dangerous.

The federal government had earlier described Nigeria as one of the most fortunate countries saying it was free of the coronavirus ravaging parts of the world.

The authorities had said there was no recorded case of the virus in Nigeria and Africa like it is happening in China and other countries where it has spread to.

The clean state of the country was confirmed by Chikwe Ihekweazu, head of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC).

Legit.ng recently enlightened Nigerians and others about the symptoms of the ailment which is currently ravaging China and has spread to some other countries.

Meanwhile, in their bid to find a vaccine for the deadly disease, Legit.ng reports that Australian scientists have recorded a medical breakthrough by growing coronavirus in a high-security lab.

According to the report, the feat was achieved by experts at the Peter Doherty Institute for Infection and Immunity, who took a sample of the virus from the first patient diagnosed in Australia.

It quoted Daily Mail as saying that the scientists will now share the virus with the World Health Organisation (WHO).
