The Premier League club and the Premiera League side have been dragging but a deal seems to be on the cards three days to the end of the January transfer window.

It is understood that the Red Devils will pay an initial fee of £46.6m including add-ons of £8.5m based on appearances and Champions League qualification.

Fernandes is expected to sign a five-year deal and the 25-year-old midfielder is yet to agree personal terms.

The Portugal international is set for a medical on Thursday, January 30, before he would be unveiled on deadline day.

La Liga side Barcelona have been repeatedly linked with the midfielder and in view to loan him to Valencia as part of a deal to sign Rodrigo.

However United have been on the trail of Fernandes for five years and the Lisbon star has also expressed his desire to play at Old Trafford despite interests from top European clubs.

Fernandes in the United squad will come as a huge boost to Solskjaer who is looking to bolster his team after injuries to Paul Pogba, Marcus Rashford and Scott McTominay.
