Manchester United have over the years have struggled to hit top form since Sir Alex Ferguson retired at Old Trafford.
The likes of Liverpool and Manchester City have dominated English football over the years with United failing to make top four in the last two seasons.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer are 33 points behind their fiercest rivals in the league and the Norwegian's boss future at the Theatre of Dreams is no doubt.
But in 2009, the 2007 European champions were top of the league above Liverpool and have a game in hand, while Aston Villa were comfortably sitting in the top four.
The former Premier League champions last played in the Champions during Jose Mourinho's era and had to qualify for the competition through their Europa league triumph the previous campaign.
A football agent who worked with United has stated that the club's recent slip ups over the years have left them far behind their competitors in the topflight division.
“United are absolutely miles behind Liverpool and Man City – and not just in terms of the Premier League table.
“It’s estimated that for every year a club continues to fail, it is going to take between 18 months and two years to make up that lost ground.
“United have been sinking fast since Fergie retired – so work it out.
“They’re at least 10 years behind their biggest rivals in terms of having the right structure to put a team capable of winning the title and the Champions League on the pitch. And that’s being kind,” quoted by the Mirror.
