Akwa Ibom police rescue 25 NYSC members, 21 security personnel

Following the violence that followed the rerun election in Akwa Ibom, the state police command says it has rescued 46 abducted persons.
The NYSC members were kidnapped by political thugs during the rerun election in Essien Udim local government area, comprising 25 corps members and 21 security personnel.
This was disclosed by the police public relations officer, CSP, Nnudam Fredrick.
The police also said electoral materials were recovered and 79 suspects arrested at the residence.
Recall that Legit.ng reported that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) condemned actions of people who perpetrated violence during the rerun election in the state.
This was disclosed in a statement signed by the state Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) Mike Igini.
He pointed to the disruptions that took place in Ukana West (Ward 11), Units 5, 8, and 9 as well as Ikpe Annang (Ward 5), Unit 12 in Essien Udim local government area.
In a related development, the state police command also confirmed the arrest of some persons in connection with electoral violence.
Also, recall that Legit.ng reported Godswill Akpabio lost a bid to return to the Senate in a poll won by rival Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
The election result was declared in favour of PDP's Christopher Ekpenyong against APC's Akpabio, who had earlier occupied the seat but was floored in the 2019 election.
Nigeria's electoral body discloses that Ekpeyong won the seat by beating Godswill Akpabio, a current minister of Niger Delta, by 134, 717 to 83, 820 votes to clinch the seat for the upper chamber of the National Assembly.
