Ismaila Shagari, ex-Kwara United and Gombe United goalkeeper, dies at age 29

The Nigerian football fraternities have been thrown into deep mourning on Tuesday morning, January 28, following the untimely death of goalkeeper Ismaila Shagari.

Ismaila Shagari died on Monday night, January 27, at the Federal Teaching Hospital in Gombe after long battle with kidney problems.

He was among the players Nigerian National League side Gombe United registered this season for their campaign in the second tier in their quest to get promotion back to topflight.

But the kidney problem started before the season kickoff in which Ismaila Shagari was unable to join his teammates for their training sessions.

He was then taken to the Federal Teaching Hospital in Gombe where he was hospitalized for serious medical treatments.

Shagari was said to have been discharged in December 2019 from the hospital in which his family members and teammates were happy thinking he would be able to return to training.

Unfortunately, he suffered a setback just a week after been discharged and was rushed back to the hospital where he was placed on emergency care.

It was while recuperating after an operation at the Federal Teaching Hospital in Gombe that Ismaila Shagari died on Monday night, January 27.

According to one of his former teammates at Gombe United, Kazeem Yekini, he told Legit.ng that Shagari's death came as a shock to all the players.

''This is not a good news for all of us this morning because we have been praying and expecting Shagari to return to training not knowing that he won't.

''He was a good friend and an hardworking professional who will be missed by all of us here in Gombe and I pray that his soul rest in peace,'' Kazeem Yekini explained.

Ismaila Shagari started his football career at FC Taraba 12 years ago before leaving after a season to join Plateau United.

From Plateau United, the agile goalkeeper moved to Kwara United where he played under coach Samson Unuanel and Tunde Abdulrahman.

After leaving Kwara United, he followed coach Aliyu Zubairu to Akwa United, but hand injury prevented him from shinning in Uyo before he was later dropped.

Throughout the whole of last season, Ismaila Shagari was unable to play due to the injury which he later recovered from.

When he recovered completely, Shagari signed for Gombe United with the hope of him reviving his career before he encountered kidney problem which took his life.

Earlier, Legit.ng had reported how American professional football team Austin Bold announced the tragic and untimely death of former Nigeria international Isaac Promise.

According to the USL Championship club, the 31-year-old former Super Eagles star died on Wednesday night, October 2, 2019 after a reported case of heart failure.
