Our security system has failed - Senate president Lawan laments

Nigeria's Senate president, Ahmad Lawan, on Monday, January 27, condemned the current security situation in Nigeria.
Daily Trust reports that the Senate president said the escalation of killings and kidnapping across Nigerian states has mandated the ninth Senate to engage with security agencies in the country.
Speaking with journalists in Abuja, Lawan said the engagement with these agencies is aimed at finding a lasting solution to the menace caused by the criminal elements in the states.
"We’ve had a series of engagement before, but the escalation now has made it mandatory that we’ve to have a definite position as a government because we just cannot play politics with security issues," Lawan said.

He also said that the ninth Senate will take a position on reviewing Nigeria's security architecture for a restructuring of the whole process.
He said: "The present system does not appear to give us the type of outcome that we need. Whether it is the federal, state or local government, even the traditional rulers or others, the most important thing is to secure the lives and property of Nigerians and we would do that."
He further called on Nigerians to cooperate with all relevant agencies in securing the lives and property of citizens.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously reported that troops of the Nigerian Army had arrested the top informants and some spies for the Boko Haram terrorists.
The Army said the suspects were arrested in Yobe state on Sunday, January 19, as the troops killed two of the terrorists.
