PDP chairman in Imo state defects, reportedly plans to join APC

- A huge hole is left in the camp of a political organisation in Imo state as its chairman, Charles Ezekwem, defects

- Ezekwem says in his resignation letter that prevailing developments in the PDP with him as chairman forced him to leave

- The politician is believed to be heading for the new ruling party in the state, APC

The emergence of Hope Uzodinma as the head of affairs in Imo government has further resulted in the depletion of the former ruling Peoples Democratic Party in the state.

This follows the defection of the party's chairman, Charles Ezekwem, to the current party in charge of governance, the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Ezekwem confirmed he was leaving the PDP in a letter on Monday, January 27, but did not mention anything about his immediate political future.

According to him, he decided to leave because his loyalists and supporters had approved the movement as well as political developments in the state.

In the letter, Ezekwem said these prevailing circumstances had something to do with his position as chairman.

He said his decision comes after he had consulted with his family and his supporters.

“I thank the teeming population of Imo state PDP, who thoughtfully elected me as their state chairman.

"I sincerely regretted the inconveniences the party faced. I thank the party for the support they gave me and the opportunity to serve in that capacity," he said in the letter.

Vanguard reports that his reason for resignation may be different from what he said in the letter.

The report said Ezekwem left the PDP to avoid a move by some people in the party to suspend him ahead of a planned congress later in 2020.

The report added that the defecting PDP chairman had not been close to Emeka Ihedioha and that he had never supported the governor.

Ezekwem is yet to formally speak about which party he would move to, but there are insinuations that he had made up his mind to join the APC.

He was the chairman of a board in the state and there are analysis that he took a quick decision to avoid being axed by the PDP.

Some of the analysts think the plot was to disgrace him out of office as the PDP congress gets close.
