New minimum wage: Ondo govt, NLC agree on N30,000 payment for workers

- Ondo state has agreed to begin payment of the N30,000 new minimum wage

- The news was made public by the state's head of service, Oluwadare Aragbaye, on Saturday, January 25

- Aragbaye said that the agreement will take effect from the end of January onward

January will mark the beginning of good things for civil servants in Ondo state as the government has concluded arrangement to begin the payment of the new minimum wage.

This came after the state government and the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) agreed on the new payment structure and months of consultations and deliberations, The Nation reports.

Oluwadare Aragbaye, the state's head of service, revealed the new deal with labour leaders who took part in the negotiations.

Aragbaye, making the disclosure on Saturday, January 25, said that the state will continue to address the welfare of workers as a key issue.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng reported that workers in Edo state had been paid the new minimum wage, as civil servants and other members of the state’s workforce were in a frenzy mood when they received their pay on Friday, January 24.

Governor Godwin Obaseki had in his New Year message, assured civil servants that the state government would commence payment of the new minimum wage in January.

Legit.ng gathered that a cross-section of the workers who spoke with journalists in Benin city, the Edo state capital, said they were impressed with the governor’s unflinching commitment to workers’ welfare.

A staff with the ministry of agriculture and natural resources, Anderson Asenoguan, said he got a credit alert in the afternoon on Friday, January 24, and observed the increment in his salary.

According to him, “We, indeed, have a man of integrity as a governor in Edo state. The governor promised he was going to pay the new minimum wage in January and today, he is one of the few governors in Nigeria to have started payment.

“It has been jubilation galore in my office since we got the credit alert and saw the increment. This is truly the dawn of a new era for workers in Edo state.”

The report said that a driver attached to the Government House, Benin City, Aiyowiere Obey, noted the new wage is most commendable, noting that the governor has always been a man of his words. He said: “I appreciate the governor for being prompt in the payment of the new minimum wage. Workers in Edo state are full of praises for him as this is the first time, we are benefiting from such an increment without having a clash with the government.”
