Polygamy has been described as the major cause of poverty and hardship in the northern part of Nigeria.

This view was aired by Muhammad Sanusi II, the emir of Kano, who on Friday, January 24, delivered a lecture through a representative at the convocation of the Federal University, Gusau, in Zamfara state, The Cable reports.

Sanusi said that poverty, unlike in the south, will continue in the north until indigenes in the region do away with the tradition of picking more than one wife at will.

The monarch said: “There are people who cannot afford to feed one wife but are ready to marry three wives and have more children than they can feed, talk less of paying for their school fees."

He went on to say those northern children who came from homes where husbands divorced their wives so as to marry more women turn out to become criminals and unleash terror on others.

Sanusi added: “The issues we have today such as drug abuse, Boko Haram, banditry and unemployment would be nothing compared to what we will be dealing within the next 20 or 30.”

Meanwhile, Legit.ng reported that terrorism in the northeastern part of Nigeria would in no time become a thing of the past according to President Muhammadu Buhari.

The president gave this assurance on Friday, January 24, as he received Janez Lenarcic, the European Union (EU)'s commissioner from crisis management in Abuja.
