Re-run elections: IGP orders security beef up in affected states

- As rerun elections are to be conducted in 11 states in Nigeria, the police have taken some steps towards ensuring security throughout the period

- IGP Adamu has ordered police commissioners to do their utmost to ensure that all INEC offices are protected

- The police boss called on candidates and political parties to be law-abiding throughout and beyond the conduct of the elections

Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Mohammed Adamu has ordered that security should be beefed up in all 28 states where rerun elections in federal and state constituencies will be conducted on Saturday, January 25.

IGP Adamu, in his directive, ordered all police commissioners in the affected states to ensure thorough security strategies at all offices of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), The Nation reports.

According to Frank Mba, the police spokesperson, the IGP's order was aimed at making sure there is smooth and fair conduct of the polls which all the candidates and parties can attest to.

for the elections to strictly abide by rules guiding the conduct of officers on election duty.

Mba assured Nigerians that officers of the force will be both professional and avoid political sentiment and bias in carrying out their duties, adding that politicians and well as the voters should put on their best forms of civility throughout and beyond the period.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng reported that following what it described as dissatisfaction with INEC, the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Akwa Ibom state said it had withdrawn from the re-run election scheduled for Saturday.

This was disclosed in a press conference on Friday in Uyo by Ini Okopido. Okopido who is the state chairman of the APC in the state blamed INEC for the withdrawal. Meanwhile, Nigerians on social media have reacted to the withdrawal.
