Oko Oloyun: Police suspect fraud, question escorts, staff over Fatai Yusuf's murder

Oyo state is a mourning mood over the murder of Nigeria's foremost traditional medical practitioner, Fatai Yusuf, popularly known as Oko Oloyun on Thursday, January 23.

As many wondered why and how the revered industrialist who has manufactured many herbal products treating various ailments was killed, the police in Oyo state on Friday, January 24 made some details surrounding the murder public.

According to the commissioner of police in Oyo state, Shina Olukolu, Yusuf was shot dead by gunmen yet to be identified on the Abeokuta/Igbo-ora/Iseyin in the Ibarapa area of the state.

He was specifically attacked around Akeroro Area while travelling in a two-car convoy, Channels TV reports.

Legit.ng gathers that the gunmen attacked the vehicles conveying Yusuf by firing shots from the thick forest where they were hiding.

The armed police escorts travelling with Yusuf reportedly engaged the gunmen but they escaped while one of the shots hit the trado-medical expert who died later of his bullet injuries.

The ongoing investigations by the police have, however, uncovered a new development, following the discovery of the destruction of some financial records at Oko Oloyun's Lagos office.

The police said the deceased had earlier uncovered a suspected financial fraud in his office which allegedly led to the burning and destruction of some financial/bookkeeping records.

The police said there is a possible link between the fraud and the eventual murder of Yusuf.

The two police escorts and some of the staff of the deceased have been taken to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Ibadan for questioning.

Earlier, Legit.ng reported that Yusuf was shot dead by unknown gunmen, according to the Oyo police command.

The police command disclosed that Yusuf died after he was shot by suspected assassins around 4.30 pm.

Yusuf’s body has been deposited in the Igbo-Ora General Hospital.

In another news report, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has been killed by suspected assassins in Oyo, a situation that is said to be causing panic among the party faithful as well as the people of the state.

The murder of Alhaji Babatunde Oreitan happened in the afternoon of Wednesday, January 22.
