IGP Adamu directs Oyo CP to effect reinstatement of sacked councils

- Adamu tells the APC chairman in Oyo state to work with the commissioner of police in ensuring that the chairmen and councillors are reinstated in line with the legal advice given by the attorney-general of the federation (AGF), Abubakar Malami

- AGF Malami had in a January 14 letter, advised Governor Seyi Makinde to remove the recently appointed caretaker chairmen and reinstate the elected councils

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mohammed Adamu, has directed the Oyo state police commissioner, Shina Olukolu, to take actions that will reinstate the sacked chairmen and councillors.

The IGP in a letter dated January 23, told the state chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief Akin Oke, to work with the commissioner of police in ensuring that the legal recommendations of minister of justice and attorney-general of the federation (AGF), Abubakar Malami, are implemented, The Nation reports.

AGF Malami had in a January 14 letter, advised Governor Seyi Makinde to remove the appointed caretaker chairmen and reinstate the elected councils.

The AGF said his legal advice was based on the judgment of the Supreme Court, which stated that governors and assemblies do not have the right to sack democratically-elected local government councils.

Meanwhile, after weeks of accusation and counter accusation, the federal government and the southwest governors on Thursday, January 23, finally reached an agreement on Operation Amotekun.

Vanguard newspaper reported that the parties agreed that legal framework should be put in place on the establishment of the regional security outfit, Amotekun.
