Suspected herdsmen destroy N17m rice farm in Enugu, threaten to kill owner

- A rice farm in Enugu state has been destroyed by suspected herdsmen

- The herdsmen destroyed produce worth N17 million

- The owner of the farm, however, said the herders threatened to kill him

The efforts by the federal government and some private farmers to produce homegrown rice might be jeopardised if something is not urgently done to prevent the invasion of rice farm by suspected herdsmen across the country.

The Sun reports that a rice farm with produce worth N17 million in Akpugo in Nkanu East local government area of Enugu state was destroyed.

Legit.ng gathered that the farm belongs to a former gubernatorial candidate of United People’s Party (UPP), Ekene Uzodinma, who raised the alarm on Thursday, January 23, that herds of cattle had eaten up over eight hectares of his farmland.

He said the herders who invaded the farm threatened to deal with anybody who dared to stop their cattle from grazing.

The former gubernatorial candidate said his workers called him at about 7pm to tell him of the incident.

From how much local rice is worth, the farm produce destroyed could have provided at least 80 tons of rice as finished product.

However, Uzodinma said the havoc by the herders had created fear among owners of rice farms and workers from going to their farms.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng had previously reported that a magistrate court sitting in Ado-Ekiti, the Ekiti state capital on Tuesday, January 21, arraigned three herdsmen for alleged unlawful destruction of a rice farm worth N4.5 million.
