- Virtue has never been known at any time to cause shame to anyone who possesses it
- So is it with Francis Erhabor a police officer in Akwa Ibom who was recently honoured with the 2019 Integrity Icon award
- Erhabor's recognition and fame came after he refused to receive a bribe of N6 million to allow oil bunkering in Edo
There is no doubt that integrity will always attract great reward in the end, although maintaining virtues seem unbearably tough when corruption becomes the order of the day.
This is exactly the story of the divisional police officer of Itam, Akwa Ibom state command, Francis Erhabor, who was earlier reported to have refused to accept a bribe of N6 million to compromise the security agency.
Erhabor, much to his pleasure and surprise, was on Tuesday, January 21, honoured with the 2019 Integrity Icon award organised by Accountability Lab, Luminate, MacArthur and Ford Foundation in Abuja.
The policeman said that he was promised the said sum per week to look the other way from an oil pipeline in Edo state which he was manning at the time.
However, Erhabor said that he rejected the offer, even if he was earning only N37,500 as his monthly allowance.
He said that his refusal to be enticed by the juicy bait was informed by his early oath taken at the time when he was being recruited into the force.
The rare policeman said that after taking his stance, he suffered a lot of persecution, intimidation and threat from those who were trying to buy him over with money.
Erhabor said that he had promised God that he will not be swayed and prayed for strength to stick only to his monthly salary.
Meanwhile, Legit.ng reported that a video of a policeman is currently making rounds on social media. The officer had been accused of demanding a bribe on camera.
The trending video showed the unidentified policeman holding a Point of Sale machine in his hands while he held a man hostage.
The officer was heard loudly demanding that the young man should hand over his Automated Teller Machine (ATM) card.
However, the officer never revealed what he intended to use the ATM card for and the young man was also heard loudly refusing to give him the card.
