- The Christian body made the demand while reacting to the murder of a pastor by terrorist group, Boko Haram

- CAN called for help from the international community to tackle the Boko Haram menace and accused the Buhari's government of failing to protect Christians

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has reacted to the murder of a church leader, Reverend Lawan Andimi in Adamawa state by the terrorist group, Boko Haram.

Boko Haram killed the cleric on Monday, January 20, after reported negotiations to release him broke down.

The president of CAN, Rev. Dr Samson Supo Ayokunle in a statement sent to journalists on Tuesday, January 21 said the organisation is: “almost losing hope in the government’s ability to protect Nigerians especially Christians.”

Andimi while in captivity made a passionate appeal to the leadership of his church and the federal government to come to his rescue in a viral video.

Ayokunle said: “The church did everything within her reach to secure the safe release of this pastor gentleman but it was not possible because they didn’t have the military power to do so.”

He continued: “The church views the unabated kidnappings, extortions and killings of Christians and innocent Nigerians as shameful to the government that each time boasts that it has conquered insurgency.

“It is reprehensible and saddening that each time the government comes out to claim the defeat of the insurgency, more killings of our people are committed.

“In the light of the current developments and the circumstantial facts surrounding the prevailing upsurge of attacks against the church, it will be difficult for us to believe that the federal government under President Muhammadu Buhari is not colluding with the insurgents to exterminate Christians in Nigeria bearing in mind the very questionable leadership of the security sector that has been skewed towards a religion and region!”

The umbrella body of Christians in Nigeria also accused the Buhari administration of living in denial and failing to face reality.

The organisation called for a total overhaul of the present security architecture and passed a Vote of No Confidence in the current security chiefs in the country.

CAN said it is losing hope in the Buhari's government, adding that Christians have become endangered species under the present administration.

“We know that very soon, God will unmask these ungodly and wicked elements amidst us and their collaborators in Jesus name,” the statement concluded.

Ayokunle, however, called on Christians all over Nigeria to commence three-days fasting and prayer session.

Meanwhile, more than 1,000 residents have reportedly fled their homes in Auno community of Konduga local government area to Maiduguri following sustained attacks by Boko Haram insurgents along the Maiduguri/Damaturu highway.

Reports say villages within the locality have been facing constant attacks by insurgents despite the presence of several military checkpoints in the area.

“As of this afternoon, more than 1,000 people have fled their homes in Auno, many left on Saturday to Maiduguri. As we are speaking, pickup vans and trucks are conveying people’s belongings. I’ve begged them not to allow the town to be deserted, but they’re not listening to me," a community leader said.
