Lagos allegedly bans Okada, Keke from major roads, highways, bridges

- A purported list of roads where Okada and Keke riders are not allowed to operate was released on Tuesday, January 21

- The list includes major roads, highways, and bridges cutting across different parts of the state

- The Lagos state government has, however, dismissed the alleged ban, saying it was yet to decide on the operations of Okada and Keke riders in the state

Channels TV reports that the Lagos state government has banned commercial motorcycle and tricycle operators from operating in some major roads and highways in the state.

The newspaper reports that the state government announced the new directive on Tuesday, January 21, with the alleged full list of the affected roads.

Legit.ng, however, notes that the Lagos state government has dismissed the alleged ban, saying it was yet to decide on the operations of Okada and Keke riders in the state.

Traffic congestions in Lagos have in over the years made many residents of the city prefer motorcycles and tricycles as a means of transportation. Some new technology start-ups have also taken advantage of the situation to come up with numerous bike-hailing apps that allow users to order rides on smartphones.

Lagos, unofficially regarded as the commercial capital of Nigeria has been grappling with myriads of challenges ranging from security, traffic congestion, poor roads, etc. as the state's population continues to swell.

In 2019, the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) ranked Lagos as the world’s most dangerous city to live in.

Health, digital security, infrastructure and personal security are some of the parameters the organisation used to rank the cities under the study.

The Lagos state government, however, rejected that ranking saying some of its initiatives on security have started yielding results and adding that the city is now one of the safest in Africa.

Reactions to the alleged directive have been varied as some applauded the Lagos state government for the move while others share contrary views.

Some said the move would give the police and other law enforcement agents to take the law into their hands, adding that the directive will cause more suffering for the masses.

Meanwhile, the state government has also released other traffic rules bordering on ensuring the safety of lives on the roads.

Earlier, Legit.ng reported that in a bid to end the usual gridlock on major Lagos roads, the state government had begun improvements of some junctions.

This was confirmed by the commissioner for transportation in the state, Frederic Oladeinde, on Friday, December 27.

Oladeinde said that the move was one of Governor Sanwo-Olu's ways of fulfilling his promises at the beginning of his administration.

The commissioner said that the improvement of junctions will be done in areas like 2nd Roundabout Lekki/Epe Expressway, Ikotun, Allen Avenue and Maryland.

He further explained that the junctions need expansion as they can no longer meet the needs of the growing population of the state.
