The Supreme Court on Monday, January 20, upheld the election of Abdullahi Umar Ganduje as the executive governor of Kano state.

The court gave its judgment in the suit filed by Abba Kabir Yusuf, the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), challenging the election of Ganduje, candidate of the All Progressive Congress (APC), Channels TV reports.

The decision was reached by a seven-man panel of justices of the apex court led by the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) Justice Tanko Muhammad.

The panel dismissed the appeal filed by the candidate of the PDP, Abba Yusuf, challenging the outcome of the last governorship election in Kano state.

Yusuf in his appeal had asked the Supreme Court to set aside the concurrent decision of both the Kano governorship election petition tribunal and the Court of Appeal, which affirmed the election of the APC candidate.

The PDP candidate argued that he scored the highest votes at the governorship contest that held on March 9, 2019, before the Kano state returning officer cancelled the results in 207 polling units in the state, declared the election as inconclusive and scheduled a re-run election for March 23, 2019.

However, Justice Sylvester Ngwuta who read the judgment declared the apex court saw no reason to dislodge the rulings of the two lower courts upholding the election of Ganduje.

Meanwhile, the verdict on Bauchi and Plateau state governorship election appeals will be delivered by 3pm on Monday, January 20, the Supreme Court has disclosed.

Daily Trust reports that the governor of Bauchi state, Senator Bala Muhammed, is present in court as he and other stakeholders await the judgement of the apex court.

Mohammed Abubakar, Bauchi state's former governor, is challenging Governor Muhammed's election. While the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)'s Jeremiah Useni is challenging the election of the Plateau state governor, Simon Lalong of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Meanwhile, the Monday, January 20, protest organised by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Abuja, turned sour as many supporters and loyalists of the political organisation reportedly sustained injuries from an accident.

It was learned that the truck carrying some protesting members of the party to the venue of the protest swerved off the road with many of them sustaining injuries.

According to Sahara Reporters, the accident happened at the Transcorp Hilton junction.
