Rory Dewar lost his sight when he was aged 22 but was lucky enough to regain after one and a half years.

According to Daily Mail, the young suffered from a rare condition which saw his sight deteriorate slowly.

He was among 90 volunteers participating in an experimental treatment after losing their sight to Leber Hereditary Optic Neuropathy (LHON).

Rory, a former rugby player, first thought his sight disappeared due to concussions he suffered back when he was a player.

However, it was later discovered he had a disorder that affects around 30,000 people.

It is estimated men aged between 15 and 25 and women going through menopause are exposed to the disease.

The former player said his journey to recovery has been incredible and one for the books.

I can hardly believe I was legally blind and now I can see again. My family and friends are astonished. The clinical team are astonished,” he said.

Rory kicked off his treatment in 2018 at a US-based facility.

It involved getting a one-off injection to his eyeballs that contained a strain of the virus.

He then visited the institution severally after for checkups courtesy of GenSight Biologics.

“The idea is your cells replicate and the team needs to test you continuously while that happens. Your genetic make-up changes to get rid of the mutation and rejuvenate the optic nerve. It’s all been an incredible experience seeing it from the inside,” he added.
