Peter Unogwu, a retired senior official of the Department of State Services (DSS), has reportedly been kidnapped by unknown gunmen in Benue state.
ThisDay reports that Unogwu was abducted while travelling on the Otukpo-Utonkon- Igumale Road on Wednesday, January 15.
The suspected kidnappers are yet to reach out to the family of the victim to make any demand.
The police public relations officer of the state command, DSP Catherine Anene, confirmed the incident, saying police are already on the trail of the kidnappers.
A source, who spoke to the national daily newspaper, called on the security agencies to come to the aide of the people of Igumale community, lamenting that the area has become a hotbed for kidnapping.
The newspaper recalls that Unogwu's abduction comes barely a month after a businessman in the area was made to pay millions of naira for ransom after being kidnapped.
In a related development, hundreds of youths in Girei local government area of Adamawa staged a protest on Tuesday, January 7, over the incessant kidnappings in the state.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the youths blocked the federal highway passing through Girei community to Yola, the state capital, and other parts of the state.
Legit.ng gathered that the protest caused some inconvenience as many travellers and motorists were stranded.
The protesting youths vowed that the road would remain blocked until the state governor, Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, and the state commissioner of police address them and give assurance that the security menace would be addressed.
