- Ballon d'Or 2019 award was won by Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi
- But ex Chelsea star Demba Ba says Liverpool striker Sadio Mane should have won it
- Sadio Mane finished fourth behind Ronaldo, Virgil Van Dijk and Lionel Messi
Senegalese football star Demba Ba has claimed that Liverpool striker Sadio Mane should have won the 2019 Ballon d'Or award which was given to Barcelona man Lionel Messi.
Lionel Messi won his sixth Ballon d'Or award recently with Liverpool defender Virgil Van Dijk coming second, while Cristiano Ronaldo finished as third best.
Sadio Mane finished as fourth best after getting 347 points, but the Senegal international now has something to celebrate with after winning the 2019 CAF Best Player award.
34-year-old Demba Ba who now plays for İstanbul Başakşehir made it clear that 2019 Ballon d’Or vote was always unfairly weighted towards Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi.
“These days we speak so much about statistics. I believe that he had the individual and collective stats to have won the Ballon d’Or.
“I always said if you swap Mane’s stats in 2019 with Messi’s, Messi still would have won it, even with fewer goals.
“The fact that Mane won the Champions League, the Super Cup, he played an unbelievable season and finished joint top goal-scorer in the Premier League, it’s crazy! Not only that, he was decisive in all of the games. I believe he could’ve won it,'' Demba Ba told The Independent.
Earlier, Legit.ng had reported how Sadio Mane, reigning Africa footballer of the year, expressed the importance for him and players to give a helping hand to those in need.
The Senegalese forward beat competition from Liverpool teammate Mohamed Salah, and Manchester City rival Riyad Mahrez to win his first CAF best player award.
