- Virgil van Dijk has been rated as the best defender to play in the Premier League in recent time
- The Dutchman has been superb since he joined the Reds, helping them win three silverware last year
- Ex-Chelsea star Cundy disagrees with the claims saying Blues legend Terry is the best defender ever
Former Chelsea defender Jason Cundy has rubbished claims that Liverpool star Virgil van Dijk Premier League’s best-ever defender over Chelsea legend John Terry.
The Dutchman helped the Reds clinch three titles in 2019 including the Champions League and the FIFA Club World Cup.
He beat both Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo to win UEFA's best player gong in the outgone year owing to his contributions to their success.
Earlier, Martin Keown, who was a part of the Arsenal squad that won the league without losing a game crowned the former Southampton star as the best center-back in the Premier League’s history.
According to TalkSport, Keown is not alone on this matter as one Manchester United fan backing the 53-year-old former Gunner voting Van Dijk as the best defender ever in the league.
“On ability, Van Dijk probably is the greatest defender the game has ever seen,” said Old Trafford faithful Michael.
“I used to argue for years that it used to be Ferdinand, and people used to talk about Terry, Adams, [Sol] Campbell etc, etc.

“But right now players are faster than they’ve ever been, the game is as quick as it’s ever been, and Van Dijk is making defending look just as comfortable as any other center-back has ever done.”
Cundy, ex-Tottenham star does not seem to share their view after saying Chelsea legend Terry had a blistering career at a much younger age and then won more at a more advanced stage.
Speaking on The Sports Bar, the former Chelsea full-back said: “Virgil van Dijk is a complete defender, right now he is the most complete defender.
“But the only thing I would say is he joined Liverpool at 26 and he’s now 28… John Terry was captain of Chelsea and lifting Premier League titles at 24!
“This was a player who was doing it at the very, very top and much younger. I think that has to come into it, doesn’t it?”
Terry spent close to two decades at Stamford Bridge and won five Premier League titles, five FA Cups, three League Cups, the European Cup and the Europa League.
Legit.ng earlier reported that Virgil van Dijk has been named men's player of the year by the Football Supporters' Association.
The Liverpool defender beat Manchester City's Raheem Sterling, teammate Sadio Mane and Tottenham's Heung-Min Son to the award.
Leicester City Jamie Vardy and Arsenal's Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang make the top five positions in the votes cast out of 340,000.
