Amotekun: Nigerian youths appeal to FG to rescind decision

- Nigerian youths have appealed to the FG to rescind its decision on Amotekun

- According to the group, Amotekun presented the best form of community policing

- Going further, the group added that this will checkmate emerging criminality in rural and remote communities

The National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) has appealed to the federal government to rescind its declaration that Amotekun is illegal in the overall benefit of the country.

Operation Amotekun is a new security outfit inaugurated by six states in the southwest on January 9.

Bestman Okereafor, the national public relations officer of NYCN, made the appeal in a statement made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Enugu on Thursday, January 16.

He said the security outfit’s structure, which is from the village hunters to other known vigilance group working together in line with the Nigerian Police, presented the best form of community policing.

According to him, this grassroots-oriented and bottom-up structured as well as an all-involving security framework, which Amotekun presents, is the ideal policing framework for modern policing to checkmate emerging criminality in rural and remote communities.

Okereafor, however, called on all southwest residents and Nigerian youths at large to remain calm and be peaceful as ever “even as we await the position of the South-west governors and their consultations with the federal government on the matter".

Meanwhile, Legit.ng had reported that a Fulani cultural group, Jamu Nati Fulbe association, claimed that it supported the establishment of Amotekun, a regional security outfit created by the southwest governors.

The president of the group, Alhaji Abdulkadir Salihu, however, urged the governors to recruit members of the Fulani community as operatives of the security outfit.

Salihu also lamented that the Fulani community in the southwest was not carried along about the operational techniques of Amotekun.

He said: “We were not carried along as a community which is part and parcel of the southwest. Most of us who live in this community have been here for more than 40, 50 years."

He said employing Fulani as operatives of the security outfit will allay the fears that it was targeted at the herdsmen in the southwest region, adding that the Fulani community has capable hands that can work for Amotekun.

Salihu added that the Fulani community would soon meet with the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi, to intimate him about their position on the Amotekun operation.
