Cristiano Ronaldo has again made it into the UEFA's fans' team of the year but his presence was ridden with controversy as fans believed the Juve star was shoehorned.

In the best XI list released by the football governing body in Europe, the Portuguese superstar comfortably booked his place upfront with Liverpool's Sadio Mane, Bayern Munich's Robert Lewandowski and Lionel Messi.

The rarely-used 4-2-4 formation saw the shocking exclusion of Chelsea star N'Golo Kante despite his impressive performance for the Premier League side which helped them win Europa League.

The Frenchman lost his place in the midfield to Frenkie De Jong and Kevin De Bruyne with the 4-3-3 formation changed to a 4-2-4 to accommodate the former Real Madrid star.

Virgil van Dijk paired with Andy Robertson and young prodigy Trent Alexander-Arnold combined with Dutch youngster Matthijs de Ligt.

Explaining the reason for the change of the formation, UEFA attributed Ronaldo's inclusion to his role in Portugal's inaugural Nations League win.

"The formation for this year's team of the year was chosen to reflect the votes of the fans in parallel with the players' achievements in UEFA competitions.

"As a result, there are five UEFA Champions League winners and four UEFA Nations League finalists (including one winner).
