- Nigeria's Senate President, Dr Ahmad Lawan, has congratulated Imo state governor-elect, Senator Hope Uzodinma
- The apex court declared the 61-year old politician the duly elected governor of Imo state
- Lawan also congratulated the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Imo state for the victory
President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan, has congratulated Senator Hope Uzodinma on his victory at the Supreme Court on Tuesday, January 14.
Lawan also congratulated the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state, commending them for peacefully retrieving the party's mandate through a judicial process.
He said the unanimous decision of the seven-member panel of the highest court in the land has cleared any doubt on the victory of the APC in the election.
“This is a victory for democracy, the rule of law, the All Progressives Congress and the good people of Imo state,” Lawan said.
Meanwhile, the newly-declared governor of Imo state, Senator Hope Uzodinma, said his stolen mandate has been restored by the apex court.
“My mandate given to me by the people of Imo state has been restored by the highest court in the land.
“This meant that the victory given to me by the people, but denied me, has been restored. I give glory and thanks to God Almighty,” Uzodinma said through his media aide, Declan Emelumba.
In its reaction, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) described the ruling as another sad commentary on the nation’s democratic order.
The PDP lamented that the people's collective destiny had been taken from the governor they chose and handed over to someone and a political party that the residents do not want.
It lamented that Ihedioha's progress as governor of Imo state is now being jeopardised as a result of the judgement.
