Ekiti state governor, Dr Kayode Fayemi has reacted to the federal government's decision to declare Operation Amotekun illegal.
Fayemi who was one of the arrowheads and visible governors in support of the initiative said his colleagues in the southwest will respond appropriately to the Buhari's government decision.
Apart from being a southwest governor, Fayemi, a former minister in the Buhari administration, is the chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) Governors Forum.
The federal government had in a statement by the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and minister of justice, Abubakar Malami SAN had declared Operation Amotekun illegal.
The minister said as the chief law officer of the country, he was not consulted before the idea of the operation was deliberated upon.
“I don’t have an answer to this individually because I have not been adequately briefed on the new stand. I have just heard of that from you (journalists) now.
“I will try to find out the position of the governors of the southwest states. You know I do not speak for the governors. If what you are saying is true, there will be an appropriate reaction to it,” Tribune quoted the governor speaking to journalists at the Government House, Ado-Ekiti.
Meanwhile, chairman of Afenifere Renewal Group, Chief Olawale Oshun has described Malami’s statement that Operation Amotekun is illegal as rubbish.
“He is talking arrant nonsense. Let him declare Hisbah police in the 10 Northern states illegal and also let him declare the Civilian Joint Task Force in the northeast. He is talking rubbish, arrant nonsense.
“Those are not Nigerian police institutions and they are not Nigerian security institutions but they were created because there is a need; Amotekun was created because there is a need for it. He is talking nonsense,” an angry Chief Oshun said.
