- Lionel Messi vs Cristiano Ronaldo's debate is not ready to go away anytime soon
- Former Man City captain Vincent Kompany admits he loves Cristiano Ronaldo
- But the 33-year-old insists that Lionel Messi is a better player between the two stars
Former Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany has admitted that he admires Juventus superstar Cristiano Ronaldo for his hard work over the years.
The Belgium international rose to prominence at the Etihad Stadium before parting ways with the Premier League champions at the end of last season.
He was part of the squad that made history in England after leading the Citizens to become the first EPL team to win a domestic treble in a season.
The 33-year-old played one season against the Portuguese forward before joining Real Madrid in 2009 in the then world-record fee of about £80 million.
Despite admitting that he loves Ronaldo's hard work, Kompany says Barcelona star Lionel Messi is a better player between the two - joining all others who have weighed in on the matter.
The Argentine recently won his sixth Ballon d'Or award - beating the Portuguese forward and Virgil van Dijk to the prize.
"I love Ronaldo and I love all of the things he stands for, but I have to go for Messi," the Belgian said, according to the Daily Express.
"Just the speed of execution… it's talent and I think talent is difficult to overcome when it's that good.
"But I love Ronaldo because I've seen his progression. I've seen him being a player that he was at United and progressed to being so driven and then going to a different way of playing.

"The way he plays now at Juventus is different to the way he played when he was at United, different to how he played when he was at Real Madrid. "I love that in a player, but Messi is special+."
Both Ronaldo and Messi have dominated world football since they hit limelight and they are not showing any sign of stopping anytime soon.
Legit.ng earlier reported that former Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson has named the difference between Cristiano Ronaldo and his long rival Lionel Messi, thus contributing to the greatest-of all-time debate.
The legendary coach was asked what makes the Portuguese superstar a delightful watch than his Barcelona rival.
And unsurprisingly Fergie, who is considered Ronaldo's football father, quickly named the Juve star's unique qualities that rank him above the Argentine.
