Five senior lawyers have indicated their interest to contest for the position of the national president of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA).

The aspirants' indication of interest follows the tenure expiration of the current NBA's president, Paul Usoro (SAN), in August.

Legit.ng gathers that the position has been zoned to the south west with Muyiwa Akinboro, Tunde Ajibade, all Senior Advocates of Nigeria; Awoniyi Alabi, Olumide Akpata and Adesina Ogunlana, contesting for the position.

Despite bickerings that three lawyers who have not attained the position of senior advocate of Nigeria are on the list of aspirants, Legit.ng understands that some former NBA presidents like - Priscilla Kuye, Alao-Aka Bashorun- held the position without being SANs.

Also, some lawyers are said to be of the opinion that only a SAN can command respect from other lawyers and hold the government to account.

In his reaction to these opinions, a Lagos-based lawyer, Raymond Adekunle said the uncontended quality required to lead the NBA is courage.

Adekunle said: “One of the best presidents the NBA has ever had in the person of Aka Bashorun of blessed memory was never a SAN, yet he died a distinguished and an archival advocate in his own right. He was a thorn in the flesh of military dictatorship. And since then, the NBA leadership has been marked by a succession of forgettable tenures.”

Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously reported that a senior advocate of Nigeria and human rights lawyer, Femi Falana, had accused the NBA of complacency in human right issues which involves ordinary Nigerians.
