Professor Wole Soyinka has declared his support for the establishment of ‘Amotekun’ of Amotekun by the southwest governors.

The respected Nobel Laureate described it as a pleasant New Year gift. He added that it has shown that the yearnings of Nigerians prevailed.

Soyinka said this while addressing some elder statesmen and prominent Nigerians at an event held on Monday, January 13, at the Muson Centre in Lagos.

The event tagged ‘Never Again’, was organised to discuss the way forward, 50 years after the Nigerian civil war, Channels TV reports.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng had reported that the Aare-in-Council, the highest decision making organ of the 15th Aare Onakakanfo of Yorubaland, Gani Adams, backed south-west governors for setting up the Amotekun security initiative.

The council in a statement issued after its quarterly meeting, on Sunday, January 12, said the outfit will complement the security architecture of the region, and the nation at large, as well as boost the security of lives and property in the land.

It dismissed the rumour that Amotekun security outfit was a military wing of the Oodua Peoples Congress (OPC), but noted that the OPC would continue to lend its rich experience to support any initiative that will help the secure Yorubaland.

The meeting presided over by the Aare Onakakanfo of Yorubaland also announced the appointment of new members of the Aare-in-Council.

Meanwhile, contrary to many views by some Nigerians, personnel of the newly established Operation Amotekun in the southwest region of Nigeria will not carry arms.

The Nation reports that the chairman of the Nigerian governors' forum, Kayode Fayemi, said Operation Amotekun is a compliment to the Nigeria Police and not an alternative.
