- Bakare said that he never suggested that President Buhari should handpick his successor in 2023
- The cleric said that he still believe in the use of free and fair election as a means of installing a government in a democratic setting
The presiding pastor of the Citadel Global Community Church which used to be known as the Latter Rain Assembly, Tunde Bakare, has made some key clarification as to what he told President Muhammadu Buhari ahead of 2023.
Bakare, on Sunday, January 12, said that he comments on how President Buhari's successor should emerge was taking out of context and terribly misquoted, Daily Trust reports.
Clarifying his remarks, the cleric said that he did not"insinuate at any point that Buhari should pick or choose his successor as some news outlets have conjured."
The cleric said that he believes, like other well-meaning Nigerians, that free and fair election is the only proper medium of transiting power from one demcratic government to another.
Quoting himself as what he actually said in relation to the issue, Bakare said: "...a key responsibility that history has bestowed on President Muhammadu Buhari at this turning point in our journey to nationhood is to institutionalise systems of accurate succession that will build and sustain the Nigeria we desire.”
Earlier, Legit.ng reported that Bakare had listed what he described as the true enemies in Nigeria.
According to Bakare, the true enemies of Nigeria are found in every level of government, from the local to the state to the federal levels, and in every arm of government in Nigeria.
He said those who partake of the loot and those who celebrate looters are the true enemies among the people.
The cleric said that Nigeria's true enemies are found at every level of government and that they can also be found on the streets, in households and in the marketplace.
He added that those who choose to be spectators while the nation goes down the drain on their watch.
