A report by the Guardian indicates that Iran government has admitted that its military made an “unforgivable mistake” in unintentionally shooting down a Ukrainian jetliner, which killed all 176 people onboard.
Legit.ng reports that a thread of tweets by the Iranian president, Hassan Rouhani, said that armed forces’ internal investigation has concluded that missiles regrettably fired due to human error caused the horrific crash of the Ukrainian plane and death of 176 innocent people.
He said investigations have been on-going to identify and prosecute the great tragedy and unforgivable mistake.
The foreign minister of Islamic Republic of Iran, Javad Zarif, described the incident as sad one, adding that preliminary conclusions of internal investigation by Armed Forces indicated human error at time of crisis caused by US adventurism led to disaster.
He said: "A sad day. Preliminary conclusions of internal investigation by Armed Forces: Human error at time of crisis caused by US adventurism led to disaster. Our profound regrets, apologies and condolences to our people, to the families of all victims, and to other affected nations."
According to a report by Al-Jazeera, the Ukraine’s president, Volodymyr Zelenskiy, responded on the morning of Saturday, January 11, that Iran must make an official apology and agree to full investigation and compensation, as well as co-operating with Ukraine’s own investigators.
He said: “Our 45 professionals should have full access and co-operation to establish justice. The Islamic Republic of Iran deeply regrets this disastrous mistake. My thoughts and prayers go to all the mourning families. I offer my sincerest condolences.”
The report also had it that in a statement posted on social media, Iranian President, Hassan Rouhani wrote that the country “deeply regrets this disastrous mistake.
"My thoughts and prayers go to all the mourning families. I offer my sincerest condolences. Investigations continue to identify and prosecute this great tragedy and unforgivable mistake.”
It was gathered Ali Abedzadeh, head of Iran’s civil aviation authority, had on Friday, January 10, said it was impossible due to close coordination between Iran’s air defence and the civil aviation department.
“What is obvious for us, and what we can say with certainty, is that no missile hit the plane,” Abedzadeh told reporters in Tehran.
It should be recalled that the jetliner, a Boeing 737 operated by Ukraine International Airlines, went down on the outskirts of Tehran during takeoff just hours after Iran launched a barrage of missiles at US forces in Iraq.
