Operation Amotekun: North would get its own security outfit soon, says Gov Lalong

Plateau state governor, Simon Lalong, has disclosed that a similar security outfit to “Operation Amotekun” for the north will soon be unveiled.
Lalong said this while speaking to Aso Villa correspondents after meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari on Friday, January 10.

South West governors had on Thursday, January 9 launched the Western Nigeria Security Network (WNSN), codenamed: ‘Operation Amotekun’ to help secure the region from bandits and other criminals.
Asked when the governors in the north-central will emulate their colleagues in the southwest Lalong said: “The situation in the south might not be the same with the north but in the north, we are also looking at some ways that will also address these issues. So we have gone ahead to set up committees; those committees have done their work and we are going to meet to address these issues once and for all.
“Two, we have also agreed to key into the community policing and at the level of the committee, we have already gone far. Each state is already neck-deep in community policing. But I have not read the document, I cannot claim to have read the details of that document to understand what they mean by Amotekun.
“I saw various vehicles that were bought but you know if it’s about vehicles, many vehicles have been bought in the north. I bought almost 100 vehicles and gave to the police but that is not what will address the insecurity in my state.
“So, it may vary from south to the north but in the north, we are trying to look for comprehensive ways that will help augment what the federal government is doing in respect to insecurity.”

Meanwhile, the Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Council has called on the southeast governors to emulate their southwest colleagues by creating a joint security outfit for the region.
The group's president, Okechukwu Isiguzoro, and the secretary-general, Okwu Nnabuike, made the request in a statement.
The group, which expressed readiness to assist the governors on the project, said the joint security outfit will address the security challenges facing the southeast region.
On its part, the Northern Youths Council of Nigeria (NYCN), kicked against the formation of the security outfit in the southwest.
The national president of NYCN, Isah Abubakar, in a statement issued in Kaduna, urged President Muhammadu Buhari, not to allow what he described as “unconstitutionality” to prevail.
