- Minister of information, Lai Mohammed, has asked Bishop Matthew Kukah of the Catholic Church to face his calling and reduce his emotional outbursts
- Kukah is quoted as comparing the federal government with Boko Haram following the insurgents' recent activities
- Mohammed says the comment credited to Kukah can further split Nigerians along religious lines
Lai Mohammed, minister of information, on Friday, January, 10, lashed out at Bishop Matthew Kukah of the Catholic Church for comparing the federal government with Boko Haram insurgents.
The government urged Kukah to focus on his service to God and the unity of Nigeria through his ecclesiastical office instead of involving himself in actions that can further split the country along religious lines.
The government's statement made available to Legit.ng quoted Mohammed as saying the comment credited to Kukah is a disservice to security agencies making efforts to secure the country.
Mohammed said Kukah's comment"is not only disingenuous but also a great disservice to the men and women in uniform who are daily battling the Boko Haram and ISWAP terrorists to keep all Nigerians safe."
The federal government argued that insurgents operating in Nigeria do not subscribe to any religion, irrespective of their pretence to such.
''To now attribute the actions of these mad bunch to an orchestrated and systematic plan to elevate one religion over the other or decimate adherents of a particular religion is not only unfortunate but divisive, incendiary and insensitive,'' he said.
The minister also urged religious leaders in the country to be careful with their comments, especially where it has to do with religion.
Legit.ng earlier reported that Matthew Kukah, a respected religious leader in the country and bishop of Sokoto, recently said ethnicity and religion have become liabilities in Nigeria.
Kukah disclosed this while speaking at the convocation of Achievers University, Owo in Ondo state.
