Argentine Primera Division B side Villa San Carlos have completed the signing first transgender player Mara Gomez amidst relegation battle.

The Estadio Genacio Salice club confirmed the new arrival on social media as they hope she can help them avoid the drop at the end of the season.

Gomez was also pictured with Ludmila Angeli as the report serves as a historic event in the country's football record.

This will be the first time a trans-woman would be playing in an official Argentine FA tournament.

Reacting to the move, Gomez, who has previously played for Toronto City, said: "Football helped me change my sexuality and my personality.

"It was a moment of distraction. I have been treated well in every club I have ever played for. "We all take part in the same work and I never felt excluded from any of the squads." SunSport report

Before his recent move, Gomez was playing in an amateur regional league where she made her name as the club's top goalscorer and a two-time league champion.

Villa San Carlos have been winless since they lost their first nine games and are bottom of the log with one point after a 2-2 draw against Social Atletico Television on December 8.

Their next match is set to take place on February 9 against table-toppers Boca Juniors.
