Nigerians have revealed their mixed and rather conflicting positions on how the successor of President Muhammadu Buhari should be chosen in 2023.
A poll conducted by Legit.ng showed that 58% of Nigerians who responded on the microblogging site, Twitter, were against the idea of President Buhari handpicking who will occupy the office as Nigeria's next leader.
The poll revealed that 26% of citizens of the country feel indifferent towards the issue, which illustrates the growing political apathy among citizens.
Yet another percentage of Nigerians ( 12.8%) said that President Buhari should choose who will succeed him.
A low number of Nigerians which represents 3.5% on social media expressed indecision on the trending topic.
While some Twitter users have said that the issue should be left to political parties to decide in the 2023 presidential election, others said that even if the president chooses his successor, they would still go ahead to vote for who they think is best for them.
On Facebook, a total of 87% of the respondents say that President Buhari should not choose the next Nigerian leader while 13% say he could.
Some people believe the president, in his good intentions for Nigeria, is in the best position to at least chose the flagbearer of his party, the All Progressives Congress.
Earlier, Legit.ng reported that the presidency reacted to the call by Pastor Tunde Bakare on President Buhari to choose his successor in order to maintain his legacy.
The special adviser to President Buhari on media and publicity, Femi Adesina, said that Nigeria's next leader would not be handpicked or merely nominated by his principal.
